Create a Water Balance
For a household, monthly meter comparisons and unexplained changes may be sufficient. A business should separate water by source, building, process, and purpose: sanitation, production, cooling, cleaning, irrigation, or product formulation. Indicators per unit of production, employee, or floor area support comparison across periods. Seasonal conditions, weather, utilisation, and raw-material quality may also change normal consumption.
Leaks, Pressure, and Efficient Fixtures
A faulty toilet, tap, underground pipe, or valve can lose water without an obvious visible flow. Checking a meter when all points are closed can reveal continuous use — complex systems should be diagnosed by qualified personnel. Excessive pressure increases consumption and stresses fittings; adjustments should account for equipment requirements, fire safety, and reliable supply. Aerators, efficient showerheads, dual-flush toilets, and efficient washing machines can reduce water use without reducing performance. In businesses, changes to nozzles, wash systems, and clean-in-place processes require testing to ensure that savings do not compromise hygiene, product quality, or worker safety.
Behaviour, Operating Processes, and Irrigation
Shutting water off during unnecessary steps, running full appliance loads, dry-cleaning surfaces before washing, and improving irrigation schedules can reduce consumption without major investment. Clear process standards work better than general requests to "save water". Observe operations directly — water often continues flowing during waiting, changeovers, or breaks. A valve, timer, or revised sequence may deliver more benefit than expensive equipment. Irrigation should reflect plant demand, weather, soil, and season. Early-morning watering, mulch, zoning, and drip systems reduce evaporation. Drinking water is not always required for every outdoor purpose, but rainwater and other sources must prevent contamination and backflow into the potable network.
Water Reuse and Local Water Risk
Reuse may involve process loops, treated wastewater, condensate, or rainwater. Suitability depends on water quality, human and product contact, local law, and the required treatment level. Reuse systems need clear labelling, cross-connection protection, monitoring, and an action plan for deviations. Clear appearance alone does not prove that water is safe. One cubic metre of water has different environmental significance depending on the basin, season, and resource availability — the same saving may be especially valuable during drought. Efficiency should not transfer risk elsewhere or reduce water quality.
Verify the Result
After repairs or upgrades, compare consumption under similar conditions. Sub-metering and anomaly alerts help businesses, but the data require routine validation. Water-saving indicators should be complemented by process quality, complaints, hygiene results, energy use, and chemical consumption. Reducing water is not a success when it creates another material risk.
The most reliable sequence is to measure, repair leaks, optimise the process, install efficient equipment, and only then consider reuse. Every decision should account for safety, water quality, and local scarcity.
