It complements but cannot replace conservation of natural habitat. Recovery and reintroduction programmes must assess habitat quality, genetic suitability, disease risks, human-wildlife conflict, and long-term monitoring resources before release. Success is measured through survival, reproduction, and self-sustaining population formation.

Wildlife Trade, Invasive Species, and Community Roles

CITES regulates international trade in listed species through appendices and permits — but does not cover all domestic trade and does not replace national law. Combating illegal exploitation requires traceability, enforcement capacity, demand reduction, and viable alternatives for communities. An alien species becomes invasive when it spreads and causes significant ecological or socio-economic harm — prevention, early detection, and rapid response are usually more effective than control after wide establishment. Local people often hold valuable knowledge about seasonal change and site condition; equitable governance, compensation for wildlife damage, and participation in decisions improve trust and conservation performance.
